The sculpture “Bouquet” by Alexander Nikolayevich Burganov depicts a delicate female figure in a short dress on a round-shaped pedestal. There is a bouquet of flowers and stems instead of the upper body. It is a surreal combination of a slim female figure and a large, lush bouquet with stems growing right from the girl’s waist, which embodies the metaphors like “blossoming youth” and “blossoming girl”.

No matter how intricate the form may be, one can always find the simplest element that makes up the whole. Even the ancient Greeks referred to the process of transforming a beautiful human form into a statue as “architectonics, ” which can be understood as the art of building. The structure of this work clearly evokes the image of a Corinthian column.

The history of this composition goes back to the 1980s when Alexander Burganov created a monumental piece called “War and Peace”. This work, which can still be seen at the Burganov House, is divided into two parts. The lower level represents the theme of war, with huge fighting horses forming the main image. The sculptor enclosed this image of violent action in a metal cubic cage. Above them, on the upper level, is the space of peace, represented by female figures; they include a blossoming young girl (“Bouquet”), a beautiful undraped beloved, a pregnant woman, and a woman in sorrow. These figures symbolize different stages of life — from youth to old age like from the dawn to the sunset. The beginning of this cycle of life is embodied in the form of a blooming “Bouquet”. The center of the composition shows another female figure, holding a handkerchief in her raised hands. With no connection to a particular concept of time, the woman represents the never-ending wait for those who never returned from war.

Later, Alexander Burganov added several female figures that embodied peace to the composition “War and Peace”, including the sculpture “Bouquet”. Singled out from the original work, “Bouquet” has gained its own significance and has often been exhibited without mentioning the concept of where it came from.
