As fate would have it, two 20th-century sculptors, Sergey Timofeyevich Konenkov and Alexander Nikolayevich Burganov, happened to be neighbors. Until 1923, Konenkov had a workshop in Maly Afanasyevsky Lane where he created many notable works inspired by classical art and the Bible. Alexander Burganov has had a workshop in Bolshoy Afanasyevsky Lane for almost half a century — since the late 1970s. The two sculptors met only in the late 1960s. Eventually, Alexander Burganov created a portrait of Sergey Konenkov.

Having the privilege of being personally acquainted with Sergey Konenkov, Alexander Burganov managed to capture the distinctive features, piercing gaze, and rapid movements of his fellow sculptor who was almost 90 years old at the time.

Alexander Burganov described his encounters with the sculptor,

He had small, close-set eyes with a piercing gaze that seemed to look both at you and somewhere beyond. He also had a long ‘outdated’ hairstyle which made him look like God… He would often ask, ‘Do you believe in miracles? Do you believe in God? ’ After that, he would add, ‘For us artists, art is God.’ In general, he would often refer to the Gospels in conversation. In the 1960s, I had just started teaching at Stroganovka and he could not stand students. He would often say something like, ‘Christ told the disciples not to kill, and they crucified Him…’

In this relief forged copper portrait, Sergey Konenkov is depicted wearing a wide blouse, which was a common working attire for artists in the 19th–20th centuries. The technique of forged copper has been known since ancient times. It involved hammering a thin sheet of metal onto a mold to create a shape. An example of this technique is the Arch of the General Staff Building in St. Petersburg. The Burganov House features several works created using this technique, including the composition “Peace”.

The history of personal interactions between the two sculptors, brief everyday stories, and short but spot-on comments make this portrait deeply personal.
