The sculpture depicts the palm of the left hand with slightly parted lips in the center and the middle finger merging with the nose.

The Burganov House presents a unique world of surrealism, one of the most prominent trends in art. With its vivid images and seemingly impossible combinations of a reinterpreted reality, surrealism has gained popularity among a wide audience.

Alexander Burganov has developed his own recognizable style within the realm of surrealism, creating a world of metaphors where paradoxical ideas and unexpected contrasts come to life, and incompatible entities merge. The artist often turns to symbolic imagery. His works defy the laws of anatomy and conventional visual perception.

Robert Desnos wrote about the imagery in surrealist art,

#5

Comme, I say and transformations begin:
marble turns into water,
sky into an orange,
wine into a valley, a thread into a boat,
a heart breaks, fear spreads its net all over.

Alexander Burganov applied a creative method of transformations and filling familiar images with new meanings in his work “Portrait”.

The transformation of the hand into a portrait is incomplete. The palm has acquired the shape of a face. The cheekbones are clearly defined, the middle finger is shaped like a nose, and the lips are slightly parted on the palm. However, there are no eyes. The fingers are still in place, and the overall silhouette of a hand is preserved. Through sculptural artistic devices, the hand and face have been merged to create a surreal portrait.

Alexander Burganov has often referred to a hand as the most honest portrait of a person. Gestures can tell us more than a face. One can analyze how someone holds out their hand to shake, how strongly or gently they shake the other’s hand, whether they hide their hands in their pockets or gesture a lot during conversation.

In his work “Portrait”, Burganov emphasized the depth of ideas through transformations. The composition is perceived as an expressive image that vividly conveys a new and unexpected reality by combining and transforming common images and their original concepts and symbols.
