One of the main themes in Alexander Burganov’s art is a philosophical reflection on human life and choices, as well as the irreconcilable contradictions of the world. The artist creates sculptures some of which are difficult to comprehend at once. He believes that it is important not to impose his own opinion on the viewer. Instead, he wants the attentive observer to interpret the sculpture, reflect on it, fantasize about it, and identify the missing pieces on their own.
An example of this is “Snake”, also called “Totem”, which is installed in the museum’s Small Courtyard. It is a vertical arrangement composed of three main elements — a horse’s head, a bust without a face, and a snake twisted into a knot. The sculpture is clearly divided into three levels, with a horse’s head at the top, touching a human head in the middle, which rests on a snake at the bottom.
