The icon depicts the scene of the Ascension of Our Lord. Jesus Christ is shown in the glorious halo held by two angels in the upper part of the icon. The Mother of God with her arms raised in prayer is portrayed below in the centre. She is surrounded by the apostles. Apostle Paul is on the right and Apostle Peter — on the left. The apostles’ faces are turned to Christ. Two angels are standing behind the Virgin.
The account of Jesus ascending bodily into the clouds is given fully in the Gospels. This event took place on the Mount of Olives where Jesus led his disciples. According to the church tradition, the Virgin was also there with the apostles. At that moment two angels appeared before them and announced about the Second Coming of Christ.
The icon was restored by V.S. Baranov in the All-Union Research Institute for Restoration in 1975-2003.
