In the Urazovo Local History Museum you can see a sewing machine ‘Singer’ dated from the beginning of the 20th century. This is a lockstitch shoe machine for sewing shoe heads and tops. These ones were produced at the Russian plant of the American company Singer from 1902 to 1917.
In 1850, three inventors at once Wilson, Gibbs and Singer patented new designs of sewing machines. The most successful was Isaac Singer’s model with the so-called “swing shuttle”. The Singer company was founded in 1851 in America. A rare hire-purchase system for those times allowed this company a short time later to gain world fame and leadership.
In 1897, a branch of the Singer company appeared in Russia. In Podolsk, the company began to build a factory, which was equipped with the cutting-edge technologies of that time. Later, 65 representative offices and more than 3,000 branded stores were opened, which were scattered throughout the Russian empire. Sewing machines from Russia were exported abroad: to Turkey, Persia, Japan and China. And the Singer company became the “Supplier of the Court of His Imperial Majesty”.
