In the collection of the Urazovo Local History Museum you can see an iron dating from the late 19th century.
The history of the creation of irons goes back centuries. The first ones worked on coal and were very heavy. Such irons were called hot or brass irons, as well as charcoal irons. To iron the laundry, you had to warm it up first. To do this, the hot coal was taken and poured inside. There was a special openable lid for filling coal in the iron. The device was heated by coal, and it was possible to iron linen and clothes with it.
Constantly improving, this device has changed its appearance over the years. The invention and subsequent introduction of irons into everyday life has gone from models that are extremely dangerous to use because of coal, to extremely bulky cast iron products, as well as from alcohol devices to operating on electricity. At present, an iron is an everyday device, and hundreds of years ago it was considered a luxury item and even served as an adornment for any home.
The first written mention of an iron in Russia is found in the book of records of Queen Evdokia, wife of Mikhail Romanov, in 1636. Before appearance of ferrous irons, the smoother (in Russian — ‘rubel’) was invented in Russia — clothes were wound on a rolling pin and rolled on the table using a corrugated board. In different regions, this tool was called ‘pralnik’, ‘granchak’, ‘rebrak’ or ‘rolling’. These ‘irons’ were irreplaceable in everyday life. At that time, the fabrics were very rough even after washing, and treating clothes in this way made the fabric softer.
