The Virgin is depicted in the center of the composition, lying on the couch and surrounded by the apostles and saints. There is a woman of Jerusalem among them. The Savior in the grey and blue halo with the depiction of the host of angels is standing behind the couch. He is holding the soul of the Virgin depicted as a swaddled baby. The image of the Mother of God lying on the couch is represented with one burning candle symbolizing a prayer to God.
The Dormition of the Mother of God is a church feast which commemorates the ‘falling asleep’ or death of the Mother of God and her bodily resurrection before being taken up into heaven. According to the church tradition, the apostles, scattered throughout the world, were miraculously transported to Jerusalem to witness her death and to bury the Virgin Mary. The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the Dormition of the Virgin on August 28.
First this icon was restored at the monastery supposedly in 1918 and then in the All-Union Research Institute for Restoration by O.V. Lelekova in 1970 and by A.V. Neretin in 1980.
