The Katun is one of the main rivers in the Altai Mountains. Its name means “mistress” or “lady”. Indeed, the river descends from the mountains as a dignified and proud lady, stepping smoothly and gracefully onto the Altai plain. In some areas on its way, it forms so-called “pockets” along the banks. They have clean and warm water, and children love them. In his painting, Ivan Petrovich Popov depicted a place like this — a “pocket” along the riverbank. Wooden boats are lined up next to each other. The vast expanse is shrouded in a silvery veil of colors. In this way, the artist managed to capture the subtle atmosphere of a cloudy summer day by the riverside.
