The 16th Guards Cavalry Division was awarded four orders, including the Order of Lenin. The highest state award of the USSR was conferred to the division on February 19, 1945. The Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, noted among the merits of the division the exemplary fulfillment of the command assignments in the battles with the German invaders, the conquest of the cities of Sochaczew, Skierniewice, Lowicz and the valor and courage shown during the battles.
The cities of Sochaczew, Skierniewice and Lowicz were liberated in January 1945 by the troops of the 1st Belorussian Front during the Warsaw-Poznan offensive operation.
By mid-January 1945, the troops of the 1st Belorussian Front (including the 7th Guards Cavalry Corps, which included the 16th Guards Cavalry Division) under the command of Marshal of the Soviet Union G. K. Zhukov occupied the line along the Vistula River.
The Warsaw-Poznan offensive operation began on January 14, 1945. The result of the operation was the victory of the Soviet and Polish troops. On January 17, 1945, the troops of the 47th and 61st armies, together with the 1st Polish Army troops, liberated Warsaw. During the operation, the territory of Poland to the west of the Vistula was liberated from German troops and a bridgehead was captured on the right bank of the Oder. It was subsequently used in the attack on Berlin.
For exemplary performance of combat missions, formations and units of the front were awarded orders and received honorary titles: “Brandenburg”, “Warsaw”, “Lodz”, “Pomerania” and “Poznan”.
