In the Urazovo Local History Museum, you can see the combat jacket of Ivan Kozhedub — one of the courageous people of the country, three times Hero of the Soviet Union, Air Marshal and the famous ace.
Ivan Kozhedub was born in 1920. He took his first steps in aviation in the classroom at the Shostka flying club. Kozhedub began his combat path in March 1943 from the Urazovo airfield, as part of the 240th air regiment. During World War II, the first air battle for him almost became the last — his La-5 was damaged by the Messerschmitt-109 cannon burst. He was saved from an incendiary shell by an armored back, but when returning to his plane two anti-aircraft shells hit him. Kozhedub managed to land the plane, which could no longer be fully restored. He had to fly on the ‘remnants’ — free planes that remained in the squadron.
