The ancient temples of Yaroslavl have always been luxuriously decorated; the best local and metropolitan artists were invited to decorate them. The interiors were decorated with paintings, wooden carvings and sculptures.

The exhibition of the Yaroslavl Museum Reserve presents the Royal Doors created at the end of the 17th century for the Church of the Saviour in the City. One of the parts of the Orthodox church iconostasis is called the Royal Doors. As a rule, they consist of an over-the-gate canopy, door wings and columns. The doors serve as the central entrance to the altar during special moments of worship, for example, during solemn processions, and at the same time they block the uninitiated from accessing the Holy Table. Behind them is a veil that is opened at certain moments of service.

The entire area of the Royal Doors is decorated with flat carving. In the process of such carving, the background was deepened by 3-7 millimetres, and then painted with red, blue or green tempera paints. The masters covered the relief with a thin layer of gilding.

Carvers used ornaments from special books, and also borrowed them from the patterns of oriental fabrics. In the 17th century were popular floral ornaments: patterns of herbs and flowers, bunches of grapes twined by vines, fruits of different shapes and sizes. The choice of the ornament was not accidental: the iconostasis in the church was separated from the rest of the space by the altar, which in the symbolism of the church represents paradise and the kingdom of heaven. The Royal Doors, thus, symbolized the doors of paradise, and their luxurious ornament — the garden of Eden in bloom.
