On the left side of the icon, there is a scene of the fall of Jericho, the first city that was captured by the Jewish army. According to legend, Archangel Michael announced to Joshua Navin the command of the God, according to which the Jews were to be marching around Jericho for seven days with sounds of ritual trumpets and wearing the Ark of the Covenant - the main shrine of the Jewish people. On the seventh day the city walls fell from the sound of the trumpets and screams of soldiers. Appearance of the Archangel was associated with the divine support in the battle, and therefore the image of Michael was often placed on parade banners. He was also considered the protector of soldiers, his image often decorated combat helmets.

On the right side of the icon, there is the miracle of Archangel Michael in Chonae. According to the legend, in a city of Asia Minor the Archangel saved a church from destruction. The temple in his honor was built by a local resident in gratitude for the miraculous recovery of his daughter, who had been healed by water from the nearest spring. Archippus, the sexton, known for his righteous life served in the church. The pagans wanted to destroy the spring and kill Archippus, and sent a powerful stream of two rivers to the building. According to the legend, Archangel Michael averted the disaster: he cut a deep cleft in the rock with his rod, where the water streamed.
