Archangel Michael is depicted full-length wearing a blue robe. In his left hand, he is holding a mirror or a transparent sphere – a symbol of knowledge of the future and in his right hand - a thin measuring rod which is the symbol of power. Archangel Michael is Archistratigos, the commander of the Army of God, the chief of the angels, the patron of the ‘militant church’, i.e. all those loyal to God who fight against evil. He is considered to be the patron saint of warriors who fight the good fight. Michael is translated from Hebrew ‘Who is like God? ’ in the meaning ‘Nobody is equal to God’. He is the leader of all angels – he is above all nine orders of them. According to the legend, the Lord commends to Michael, the fearsome enemy of Satan, the souls of the righteous, therefore he is venerated as the protector of the souls of the dead at the Last Judgment.

The icon was restored by G.Z. Bykova and N.G. Bregman in the All-Union Research Institute for Restoration in 1974 and 1978.
