The first organized search expeditions and scientific studies of items from the site of the Battle of Kulikovo took place in the 1730s. They are associated with the name of Artemy Petrovich Volynsky, a well-known statesman during the reign of Peter I and Anna Ioannovna.
Senator Stepan Dmitrievich Nechaev (1792–1860) was engaged in collecting antiquities of the Kulikovo field. He was the first to identify the area of the battlefield.
Now there are more than 210 known references and descriptions of finds from Kulikovo Field, which were made from the 18th to the early 20th century. A significant part of the items (sabers, swords, chain mail, encolpions, maces, serpentine amulets, spearheads, fragments of plate armor, etc.) belonged to the time of the Battle of Kulikovo.
However, the scientific approach to the study of the battlefield had emerged only by the time of the 600th anniversary of the battle in 1980. The first archaeologists of the Kulikovo Field were employees of the State Historical Museum.
In 1996, a federal museum-reserve was created on Kulikovo Field. From 1995 to 2000, the joint expedition of the Upper Don archaeological unit of the State Historical Museum and the State Museum-Reserve “Kulikovo Field” began the first reconnaissance studies in various parts of the Kulikovo Field using modern metal detectors. In the course of the work, the search methodology also improved.
Nevertheless, it is premature to say that the work on the Don battlefield has already been completed. Today, the search for relics of the Battle of Kulikovo continues. Research is being carried out on dozens of hectares and reveals new unique items from the time of the Battle of Kulikovo. There is still an impressive amount of work to be done, since only 6% of the territory of the Kulikovo battlefield has been studied in detail.
