The State Museum-Reserve “Kulikovo Field” was created to commemorate the Battle of Kulikovo. It was a battle between the Russian army led by the Prince of Vladimir and Moscow Dmitry Donskoy, and the forces of the Horde led by Mamai. The victory in this battle became an important milestone in the history of the emerging Russian statehood, the creation of the unified Russian state with its center in Moscow, and the formation and establishment of Russian national identity.
The State Museum-Reserve “Kulikovo Field” was established in 1996 as part of the implementation of the state policy for the preservation and arrangement of a special kind of national landmarks — “Fields of Military Glory of the Fatherland” (Kulikovo Field — Borodino Field — Prokhorovskoye Field).
