European white elm is one of the longest living trees on Earth. Along with elks, sequoias and baobab trees, elms can live longer than 250 years.

This tree belongs to the Ulmaceae family. It grows throughout Europe except the Pyrenean Peninsula and the British Islands as well as in the Caucasus, Asia Minor and the Urals. Elm trees can be found in mixed forests, but more often in oak groves where among other plants they form the second vegetation tier. The tree prefers fertile grounds with a high groundwater table. For this reason, it usually grows in flood plains.
European white elm is a shade-bearing and frost-resisting tree. Its height may reach 40 meters with a wide slightly rounded crown at the top. At a young age, elms grow quite quickly while after reaching the age of 40-50 years its growth slows down. The trunk of this long living tree reaches up to one meter in diameter. Elms have big leaves reaching 14 sm in length. Its seeds containing lots of proteins and fats are used as a food source for forest animals and birds.

In case of a warm spring elm trees can be good early honey plants. Its foliage, flowers and bark contain cellulose, protein, oils, carboxylic acids and other useful substances. For this reason they are often used in folk medicine. Elms are actively used in safeguard foresting and urban greening.

The tree has strong and heavy wood, which was even used as a building material by Ancient Romans.

The Ancient Roman writer Pliny the Elder mentioned elm nursery gardens in his treatises. They were called ulmaries from the Latin word ‘ulmus’ meaning ‘elm’. In Middle Ages elm wood was used for making water pipes. Later it was used not only in construction but also for weaponry and finishing marine hulls. In Ancient Rus’ elm wood was used for making knitting needles, arcs, team poles, kitchenware and other household items.

However, European white elm also has negative features. Its blossom dust is a strong allergen and when its fruit die off, they litter the streets and parks.
