Representing German realism, Oswald Achenbach is connected with the Dusseldorf school. This landscape was painted based on multiple studies and sketches he made while traveling in Italy in 1857. The Park of Villa Torlonia was a popular destination for the citizens of Rome who loved to take a stroll. With his fresh take on Italian nature, Achenbach intensified the interplay of light and color in the leaves and in fountain water jets, creating the somewhat uplifting and cheerful atmosphere of an idyllic romance. The painter uses a broad open technique to apply color spots and distribute the light in the plane. The light contrasts always attracted the master’s attention, and he used them to create an idyllic ambiance in his artworks.
