The bag you can see here dates back to the end of the 19th century. In those times, such accessories came into fashion in Europe. From there, the Circassians took the idea of complementing women’s clothes with fine accessories. This back was hand-sewn and decorated with traditional Adyghe gold embroidery.

Sewing was one of the most important and most common women’s crafts in the Adyghe culture. Since the 10th century, Russian and foreign travelers and scientists mentioned this craft in their records. For instance, the Russian military officer and writer Fyodor Tornau wrote:
“Circassian women are very skillful in women”s crafts: rather the material will get torn than a seam made by their hands. The silver military braids that they make are one of a kind. Everything they create is of good taste and perfectly apt for practical use”.

The mentions about the art of gold sewing are also present in ancient Adyghe folklore. A girl named Setenay, a character of the Nart saga, was a gold sewing artisan. According to the legend, once the girl bet with a saddler about who would make a better work of art before the sunset. Satanay started making a say, a typical Adyghe women’s dress, and the young man, to make a saddle that he finished before the sunset. The girl understood that she would not be able to finish her work in time and asked the sun for help. The sun stopped for a moment, and Setenay managed to finish the say. When she put on the dress, the sun went down, and the young man had to admit his defeat, so beautiful was the dress embroidered with gold.
The ornaments in the Adyghe embroidery were rather minimalist. The images embroidered on clothes always had a meaning. For instance, the pendants of wedding dresses were often decorated with a heart, the symbol of a woman’s head, a diamond that was the symbol of the chest, rounded branches that went upwards and downwards that symbolized the woman’s arms and legs, or a trefoil that symbolized the birth of a child.
Not only clothes were decorated with gold embroidery: it was also used in saddles, quivers and even bags for bullets. This skill was considered obligatory for Adyghe girls, especially for those from noble families, so they started learning it since early childhood.

In the Adyghe gold sewing, the embroidery with golden threads was always combined with cords, bands, fringes and other frillings. For the researchers, this unique technique is a kind of a hallmark: this combination is almost absent in the sewing art of other peoples.
