The painting by Vladimir Treshchev depicts the Cathedral of Annunciation in the town of Solvychegodsk. The people called it ‘Stroganovsky’ — by the name of the famous family of industrialists, the Stroganovs, for whom this cathedral served as their home church.
The construction of the cathedral began in 1560 by order of Anika Stroganov, the founder of a merchant dynasty. The work went on for more than 20 years, the church was consecrated only in 1584. Moreover, the interior decorations were completed much later, in 1600. The Stroganov Cathedral has become one of the tallest buildings in the town. Now it houses one of the exhibition buildings of the Solvychegodsk History and Art Museum. Inside, ancient wall paintings, a high carved iconostasis and some of the icons from the original decoration of the cathedral have been preserved. The exhibition includes a collection of ancient Russian paintings, attires worn by priests, items from the Stroganov gold embroidery workshops, which were famous throughout Russia. Besides, on the cathedral bell tower, which was erected in 1826, there is an observation deck overlooking the town.
The creator of the painting, Vladimir Treshchev, was born in 1940 in Omsk. He graduated from the graphic arts department of the Krasnodar Pedagogical Institute now known as the Kuban State University. In 1968, the artist moved to the north and joined the Arkhangelsk Union of Artists, and two years later, his work was displayed for the first time at a regional exhibition. Then Treshchev took part in regional and all-Russian exhibitions. Some of his works entered the Arkhangelsk Regional Museum of Fine Arts and the Regional Museum of Local Lore, and some of his paintings were acquired by private collectors, both Russian and foreign.
Every summer, the artist went on a trip across the Arkhangelsk Oblast and created numerous oil paintings from nature. Among his works are views of Kenozero, Solovki, and Kiy-Island.
In the early 1990s, Vladimir Treshchev was invited to work in Norway. There, he created mainly portraits and landscape paintings. His pictures were exhibited at the art gallery in Tønsberg, Norway.
