Yefim Chestnyakov
Sister Alyonushka and brother Ivanushko
#5
As soon as researchers at the museum saw this painting for the first time, they called it ‘Sister Alyonushka and brother Ivanushko’. The subjects depicted so clearly in Yefim Chestnyakov’s art work were easily recognizable to inhabitants of Shablovo because they had been familiar with them since childhood. The locals remembered that the artist staged a play with children whose main protagonists were the girl Alyonushka and her brother Ivanushko. Years later, a sketch of the scene for a theater play with the same name was found among Yefim Chestnyakov’s manuscripts. The native villagers, however, pronounced the girl’s name as Olyonushka.

The artist often used his paintings and drawings during his theater productions of fairy tales. He was a story teller himself who involved children in performances. It is possible that Yefim Chestnyakov used the painting “Sister Alyonushka and brother Ivanushko” during his lessons with children. The art work is very expressive and informative for the viewers. The scene depicted by the artist on the canvas looks far from elaborate and yet it is full of heartfelt drama. Two children (the boy and the girl) are walking along a forest path holding hands. The sun is setting over the horizon and dusk is approaching.

The painting’s composition is simple and easy to comprehend. The faces of the children are fearful and filled with sorrow. Sister Alyonushka is holding the hand of her younger brother tightly so as not to lose him. Since the girl is older, she needs to look after her younger sibling, as is customary in a peasant family. Alyonushka appears to be deep in thought and her face looks sad. She is dressed similarly to numerous other peasant girls. The sister is wearing a bright pinafore and a white apron. But in the evening light, the colors do not look playful or bright. Her other hand is picking at her belt, perhaps out of fear or, in all likelihood, because this item of clothing, typical of traditional peasant outfits, was worn for protection.

Brother Ivanushko is obediently walking besides his sister. He looks genuinely scared, and his fear is palpable to the viewers. The artist depicted the state the child was in with great finesse and accuracy. We see a frightened boy who has only his sister to rely on in this difficult situation. The children press against each other in fear so as not to lose one another. Behind their backs, there is a landscape typical of the Kologrivsky region, with a dark seemingly endless forest stretching far into the horizon. The painting’s unusual color scheme, comprising common to nature emerald-green, greyish-turquoise, yellow and grey-blue hues, conveys to viewers that something magical is happening.

The work of art evokes a wide range of emotions in people: compassion, empathy and concern for the fate of these children with their bare feet, who ended up alone on this forest path. Peasant children who listened to the tale about the brother and sister also worried about them. The story, just as many folk tales, had a happy ending. In fact, Yefim Chestnyakov’s story was somewhat different, it was even more optimistic and positive. A girl called Berya came across sister Alyonushka and brother Ivanushko and led them to a creek with clean water. Naturally, both the painting and the fairy tale production evoked heartfelt emotions among its young audience members.
