The Virgin is shown on a couch in the centre of the composition. The swaddled Infant Christ is lying in a manger inside a dark cave; the ox and the donkey are bending over the child. It is commonly believed that these animals in the pictures presenting the Nativity of Christ symbolize the heathen and the Jewish people. The angels and shepherds glorifying the Lord are standing near the cave. Three Magi on horsebacks are depicted in the left upper corner of the icon. Below, to the left, St. Joseph is sitting and listening to an elderly shepherd. Two female servants are washing the Infant Christ to the right from them.
