Ivan Silych Goryushkin-Sorokopudov was fascinated with antiquity and often turned to historical literary works. Some of his favorite writings included the ancient Russian poem “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” and the novel “Prince Serebrenni” by Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy. The artist studied the history and culture of Ancient Russia, seeking to convey his understanding of that era through his paintings and to demonstrate its beauty as an aesthetic ideal.

One of the most moving works by Ivan Goryushkin-Sorokopudov in the collection of the Penza Art Gallery is the painting “A Kiss” completed in the 1910s. This captivating artwork is highly decorative, detailed, and bright. As the artist created a number of illustrations for “Prince Serebrenni”, the novel might have also inspired this painting. Its plot is full of drama and unexpected twists, with each character harboring their own secrets.

Another factor that contributed to the appearance of this painting was the painter’s unique hobby — collecting historical costumes. This may explain why the characters appear so convincing. Ivan Goryushkin-Sorokopudov created this painting while he was actively traveling around old Russian cities. He summarized his vivid impressions in this painting with great care and inspiration.

Ivan Goryushkin-Sorokopudov created a decorative and expressive image, showing the dynamic movement of two lovers towards each other as they kiss passionately. The setting sun illuminates their bright clothes, which stand out against the dark backdrop of the garden. The artist brings the viewer’s attention to the contrast of light and color, and the dynamic lines.

The painting is created in a broad and picturesque manner, with the brushstrokes shaping the forms in a vibrant and confident way. Through this painting, Ivan Goryushkin-Sorokopudov reflected on the Russian poetics contained in the country’s traditions. He sought to find an artistic equivalent of the essence of the Russian lifestyle of the 17th century. He was guided by the desire to convey the rich colors and textures characteristic of ancient Russian culture.
