The Memorial Tablet was installed on the Napolnaya School building in 1977. The Tablet inscription reads: ‘In this building from May 1918, the Red Guard of Alapayevsk kept in custody relatives of the last Russian Czar, executed under the sentence of the Ural Soviet in the month of July.’

On 20 May 1918 members of the Imperial Family and Emperor’s coterie were brought to Alapayevsk from Yekaterinburg. The August Persons, their companions and servants were accommodated in the building of the so-called Napolnaya School. The room next to the entrance door was occupied by Red Army soldiers, security officers and commissars, who kept guard over the exiled.

Initially the Romanovs were allowed to take a walk in the neighborhood of the school and to visit a church. Princess Elizaveta Fyodorovna worked in the garden, planted flowers and vegetables, stitched embroidery and did a lot of praying. However, a month later the conditions were hardened, the captives were forbidden to take walks. They spent the last days of their lives in the status of prisoners, they were deprived of their personal belongings and were often subject to unexpected searches during the night.

The Romanovs and their coterie stayed in the Napolnaya School till their death. During the night of 18 July 1918, they were taken out of the city. The prisoners were told that they were transferred to a safe place, but actually there was a savage reprisal in store for the prisoners at an abandoned mineshaft in the place called Mezhevoye near Alapayevsk.
Until 1 November 2017 the building housed a primary school. Now the building, situated in the historic part of the town, houses a museum. The museum employees collect artefacts somehow connected with the Alapayevsk prisoners, to tell about the last months of their lives.
As of today, the one-storied building of the Napolnaya School has retained its original appearance and layout. The red-brick building was erected in 1913-1915. In those years, zemstvo schools were built in many communities in Russia: the plan was to open 300 schools throughout the country to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Imperial House of the Romanovs. The zemstvo school in Alapayevsk was located on the outskirts of the town, in the field, hence the name of the school (“napolnay” in Russian means “located in the field”).
