The building of the Museum of Russian Heritage is located at 7 Tenisheva Street, Smolensk. It was built in 1903–1905 by Sergey Vasilyevich Malyutin to house the collection of Princess Maria Klavdievna Tenisheva. This collection was originally kept in the village of Talashkino.
Maria Tenisheva wrote in her memoir “Impressions of
My Life”,
…over the years, more and more often, more and more Russian artifacts arrested my attention, captured me, and opened me to a whole world, hitherto unknown to me, and this world increasingly attracted me to itself. I suddenly felt that all that was close to me, it was my own, familiar.
A medal was made to commemorate the transfer of the Museum of Russian Heritage from Maria Klavdievna Tenisheva to the Moscow Institute of Archaeology.
Presently, this medal is kept in the State Historical Museum. The obverse features a half-length portrait of Princess Tenisheva with the inscription “PRINCESS MARIA TENISHEVA. FROM THE MOSCOW ARCHAEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE TO THE COLLECTOR OF RUSSIAN ARTIFACTS. SMOLENSK“. On the reverse is an image of Tenishevskaya Street, the building of the Russian Heritage Museum in Smolensk and objects from the collection: Bratina cups, mugs, ladles, and strings of beads. On the left there is an image of a laurel branch, on the right — a rose flower. These are symbols of charity and glory, or the unfading light of charitable deeds. At the top of the field there is the following inscription: “SMOLENSK. MAY 30, 1911“.
…not knowing how best to express our boundless gratitude to you, the Institute decided to mark your generous gift by coining a medal with your image on it <…>. This medal will serve to perpetuate your name in the history of archaeological science, although of course, there is already a better monument, erected by yourself in the form of your museum.
Assessing Maria Tenisheva’s contribution to science, Uspensky noted,
If this museum is the pride of Smolensk, then the woman who showed such love for enlightenment is the pride of Russia.
