The photo shows Mikhail Kalashnikov fishing. For all his life, he had a great addiction to fishing, and even made fishing gear himself. His summerhouse was located on the banks of a large pond, where he spent most of his free time. Fishing was not just a hobby for Mikhail Timofeevich, but a source of inspiration and a way of concentration of thoughts. He loved to sit with a fishing rod, walk along the shore with a spinning rod. Winter fishing was the only thing he did not master.
Mikhail Kalashnikov recalled: ‘Where have I not fished? I’ve fished in lakes, in seas, and in the oceans. Every place is interesting in its own way. But the main pleasure, of course, is the communication with wildlife’.
The designer believed that every hunting and fishing session was not only a way to enjoy nature, but also an opportunity to meet interesting people. Mikhail Timofeevich preferred outdoor activities and always took a fishing rod, a gun or a camera with him. He called fishing a real peace of mind.
Kalashnikov started fishing in early childhood on the banks of the Loktevka River, where he sat with a simple homemade fishing rod. The catch was infrequent and small (“cat”s lunch”, as his family used to joke). In his youth, he fished with friends on the Lake Balkhash, where the catch was already serious.
The main purpose of fishing was not the big catch, but heart-to-heart talk with friends, fresh fish broth cooked on open fire, and conversations till dawn. Mikhail Kalashnikov took his the whole family fishing, driving them in his car a hundred kilometers away from Izhevsk. Nights were spent in a tent or right in the car. In the early morning, Mikhail went on an inflatable boat to the river backwaters. If the fishermen were lucky enough to find a floating island, they could hope for the biggest catch.
Mikhail Kalashnikov willingly shared recipes of delicious fish soup with his friends. He argued that it was the best when cooked on several varieties of fish brought from fishing. In addition to fish, you need potatoes, carrots, onions, salt, pepper and herbs. The secret ingredient was vodka that had to be added to the broth immediately after it was removed from the fire. This dish was enjoyed by both family members and friends of the famous inventor.

Other favorite fishing spots for Mikhail Kalashnikov were the Oka River, the Moscow River, the Kama and Belaya Rivers in Izhevsk. The designer recalled that in the 1950’s there was an excellent catch of pikes in Izhevsk pond. On summer nights, Mikhail and his friends practiced the old-fashioned method of fishing, harpooning from a boat. They also used dragnets and set stationary nets.
