Weaving and bead embroidery are among the most common kinds of applied arts in the Yugra region. However, each group of the Khanty and the Mansi people have their own methods and a unique set of beaded products.

In an interview with the portal “News of Yugra”, the art critic Natalia Fyodorova elaborated on where beaded jewelry is used more often: “Beaded jewelry is primarily intended to be worn on the chest and as items included in the ensemble of the national costume. On the one hand, these items complete the costume but on the other hand, they reflect established ornamental traditions. Beaded jewelry plays into the whole outfit correctly only when it is integrated into the entire ensemble of the same ornament. Combination is an important requirement for creating costumes, without it all jewelry ceases to be harmonious.”

In her book “Khanty and Mansi: a Look from the 21st Century”, Zoya Petrovna Sokolova writes that there were two types of beaded pendants that were most common among the Khanty: 

The Khanty people have special combinations of colors that they use in their bright jewelry. In the same book Zoya Sokolova says: “In the patterns of beaded jewelry, a combination of three colors is necessary. White is always used as the background color for red, green, and blue patterns. In some cases, the researchers traced the preferred color combinations: for example, very often they came across the combination of red with blue, green, yellow, black, or white (Moldanova); oftentimes red, green, black, blue are used together., a combination of red and purple, green and black, with beads of white, yellow, blue, brown (Kodolanyi). In general, red is the favorite and most often used color [of the Khanty] (Bogordaeva). Unlike white (Upper World) and black (Lower World), it belongs to the Middle World — the human realm.”
