Viktor Pavlovich Lanovenko (1936–2010) was nicknamed “the last romantic of the era”, and this says a lot about his artistic legacy.

The artist was born in the Ozeryane village of the Kuybyshev district in Amur Oblast. In 1954, he graduated from an art and graphics school in Birobidzhan with honors. In 1962, he came to Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

The 1960s was the era of newly emerging art trends, which coincided with Lanovenko’s evolution as an artist. His works are characterized by expressiveness, dynamics, color contrasts and precise graphic forms. They feature the harmonious combination of beautiful fantasy and the world’s reality.

In his works, Lanovenko strove to reflect both the splendor of his hometown nature and the rhythm of modern life. He drew inspiration from everywhere: he visited geological explorations on Badzhal, studied the life of fishermen of the Kamchatka and Amur regions, and communicated with the builders of the Baikal-Amur Mainline and the Okha-Komsomolsk Gas Pipeline.

He described his task as an artist in the following way,

I became convinced that the beauty of the world elevates and instills hope, optimism and energy only through realistic, full-fledged, and polyphonic painting that includes the entire range of visual means.

Contrasts, bright colors, and golden shimmers in the sky-blue background make Lanovenko’s painting called “Lena Pillars — Creations of Nature the Sculptor” seem realistic and fantastic at the same time.

In it, the artist turned to one of the most interesting natural monuments of the Russian North. The Lena Pillars are ancient rock formations on the Lena River. They present a complex of vertically elongated rocks ranging between 40 and 200 meters in height. Their unique shapes can pass for an enchanted forest, colonnades, arches, or palaces. The artist emphasized the large scale of the work of “Nature the Sculptor”, by placing tiny figures of people, their tents and boats next to each other.

Viktor Lanovenko observed the Lena Pillars at different times of the day, and he was impressed by how the rocks changed their appearance depending on the lighting. At sunset, they were of ominous violet and purple, and in the rays of dawn, they became sparkling gold. It was the latter that the artist chose for this painting, and he also intensified the effect by using gold paints and reflecting the stone giants on the calm smooth surface of the river.

After the artist died in 2010, his collection of paintings was donated to the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Museum of Fine Arts.
