I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. The vine and viticulture are repeatedly mentioned in the New Testament, including in the most exalted aspects.
At the last meeting of Jesus Christ with His
disciples, bread and wine were blessed by the Savior and served to the apostles
with the words “This is My Body” and “This is My Blood” (Matthew 26:26–28).

In Russia, this iconographic type is also known as “Savior the True Vine”, “Savior the Grapevine”, “Christ the Vine-Dresser”, “Savior the Vine”, “Christ the Grapevine”, “Christ the True Vine”.
In Greek, this type is called Αμπελος, which means “vine”.
In the icons of the 15th–16th centuries, Jesus Christ is surrounded by a vine, with the Virgin, John the Baptist and the apostles depicted in the branches. The images of the 17th and 18th centuries show a vine bearing clusters of grapes that grows out of Jesus’ hands or out of His pierced rib. He squeezes this bunch of grapes into a chalice — a special vessel for Christian worship.
A cultivated vineyard with ripening grapes embodies hopes for the best, and the fruits, which are implied to be on this vine, are virtues, a representation of the unity of all spiritual values that triumph over sins and delusions.
