Evgeny Viktorovich Shkurdalov (1921—2000) was born in the town of Nevel, Vitebsk/ Pskov) Region. His parents were Bolsheviks during the Civil War. He was left alone as a little boy and was put into an orphanage, which he fled to walk the streets, and end up finally at the Bolshevo labor community for problem adolescents in the Moscow Region.
In 1938, he was drafted to the Red Army. He first fought during the Soviet-Finnish war. On retirement, Evgeny decided to become a career serviceman and entered the Ulyanovsk Telecom School. Later, he took an officer refresher course.
Senior Lieutenant Shkurdalov fought against the Nazi invaders from the very beginning of the Great Patriotic War. He defended Moscow and liberated Stalingrad. He was decorated with the Red Star Order for having burnt 5 Nazi tanks. Then he served as the senior battalion aide in the 5th Guards Armor Army at the Voronezh front. In July 1943, he fought in the Kursk Salient operation, Prokhorovka battle, as the heavy KV tank crew commander.
In August 1943, the Red Army was ousting the Nazis in the Kharkov Region, Ukraine. The Shkurdalov tank crew excelled in combats at the village of Udy and in the liberation of the town of Zolochev. The tankmen wiped out over 200 Nazis, destroyed much of the Nazi weaponry, as well as captured a Wehrmacht general and some important documents. Evgeny Shkurdalov was mentioned for his valor for the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union. The award order was issued in March 1944.
In December 1943, Shkurdalov, now a famous tankmen, was severely wounded in abdomen at the village of Znamenka, survived and got back to service after medical treatment. Evgeny Shkurdalov fought against the Nazis also abroad, i.e. the Balkans and Hungary. He was awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky for the Balaton Lake operation. On the V-Day, he was honored to take part in the military parade on the Red Square in June 1945.
When the Great Patriotic War was over, Evgeny Shkurdalov entered the Armor Academy to teach there on his graduation. He also earned an academic degree of the Bauman University, Moscow. He was employed as a senior engineer by the Energia R& D and Industrial Association to design missiles. Shkurdalov retired from in 1955.
Evgeny Shkurdalov died in 2000 and was buried in the Troyekurovo cemetery, Moscow.
