The Museum of the 112th Bashkir (16th Guards) Cavalry Division houses a rare Zeiss Icon Volta 146/1 plate camera. The camera was produced by the German company Internationale Camera Actiengesellschaft (ICA AG) in 1918. The company later became part of the Carl Zeiss Group.
This antique camera shoots in 9×12 cm format. It is equipped with a Novar-Anastigmat lens with a focal length of 13.5 cm, a maximum aperture of 1:6.8, and a shutter speed of 1/25 to 1/100 s.
In the 1930s, the market of photographic equipment was preparing for big changes: cameras with film rolls began to drive out the traditional models with photographic plates. During World War II, camera production was discontinued. In November 1945, the Soviet troops decided to revive the production of Carl Zeiss. In 1947, most of the equipment of Carl Zeiss (98%) was taken to the USSR as war reparations. Thus, the camera “Kiev” (first name “Volga”) appeared, assembled entirely from German component parts.
On June 1, 1948, the Carl Zeiss-Stiftung was expropriated. However, after the GDR was established, the state-owned company VEB Carl Zeiss Jena was created on the basis of Carl Zeiss. Zeiss AG is still in operation today and is one of the oldest companies specializing in optics.
