The museum was founded on October 2, 1996. Its grand opening was held the same year to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy.
The Military History Museum of the Red Banner Northern Fleet provided significant assistance to the Severomorsk Museum during its early years, by transferring artifacts and photographs depicting the past of the naval capital for temporary storage. These items formed the foundation of the Northern Fleet Hall of Glory for a period of time. Two years later, the museum received exhibits from the room dedicated to the labor accomplishments of naval engineers, forming the foundation for the creation of a new exhibition on the construction of the city.
From the very first days, the museum has been an
integral part of the city’s cultural life. Today, the Severomorsk Museum and
Exhibition Complex is a modern cultural institution that serves as a kind of
calling card of the city. Many guests visiting Severomorsk start their
exploration of the naval capital by coming to the city museum, as it is located
right in the heart of the city.
