The Rostov Regional Local Lore Museum is the central institution among the 16 museums in the region. Its collection contains 375,000 artifacts. The museum was established on May 1, 1910. It is currently the largest museum in the Southern Federal District and the Rostov region. It is housed in four buildings within the city of Rostov-on-Don and covers a total area of 4,954 square meters.
The main exhibition of the museum, organized into eight major sections, will allow visitors to explore and appreciate the entire history and culture of the Don region and its various peoples. Among the most valuable items in the collection are those on display in the exhibition hall “Treasures of the Don Steppe”, which features unique gold artifacts of the ancient peoples who lived in these areas.
Another permanent exhibition tells the story of the
relocation of Armenians from the Crimean Khanate to the Don region in 1779. It
explores their ethnic and cultural identity as the Don Armenians. The
exhibition is located on the premises of the department “Museum of
Russian-Armenian Friendship”, which is situated on the territory of
Nakhichevan-on-Don, which once was an Armenian-populated town near
Rostov-on-Don, founded by Armenians from Crimea.
