The Museum of Local History opened in the heart of Kuzbass in 1929, just 3 years before the city of Shcheglovsk had been renamed Kemerovo.
The exposition was set up in the Palace of Labor. In 1943, the Kemerovo Museum of Local History acquired the status of a regional museum. Nowadays, the museum is one of the major cultural, educational and scientific centres of Kuzbass.

Each of the 3 thematic sections of the exposition (history, war history and natural science) occupies a separate building. The staff of the museum persistently replenishes and systematizes all of the existing collections of weapons, icons, as well as paleontological, ethnographical, geological, entomological and archaeological items.
