On March 11, 1948 it was decided to create a district museum on the basis of the school museum of local lore. Andrey Andreyevich Savvin, a well-known local historian and ethnographer, was appointed the first director.
As of April 1, 1951, there were 1733 exhibits in the museum, including 1405 in the main collection and 378 in the auxiliary collection.
Today the museum occupies a two-story building. The main collection consists of 6046 artifacts, of which 1089 items are in the permanent exhibition and 624 items are in thematic exhibitions.
The silver collection compiled by Andrey Savvin between 1948 and 1951 occupies a special place in the Department of Ethnography.
In 1958, a Nature Hall was opened, where stuffed animals such as musk deer, moose, fox, wolf, hare and others were exhibited. Also on display in the department are bones of fossilized animals.
